On July 31, the Turrell Fund visited Main St. Counseling Center to learn more about its services and school-based counseling.
What is Main St. Counseling Center?
Main St. Counseling Center (MSC) is an affordable and accessible mentoring service based in West Orange, NJ. Its mission is to remove barriers from care.
MSC provides multiple services such as:
- Group Therapy
- Individual Therapy
- Couples Therapy
- Family Therapy
What sets Main St. Counseling apart?
Therapy can be a nerve-wracking decision, which is why MSC’s office is designed to make clients feel comfortable.
Each waiting room has coffee, tea, and water as well as magazines. Inspirational quotes and paintings are displayed on the walls to bring a sense of ease.
MSC also offers a sliding scale fee, participates with Medicare and Medicaid, and accepts more insurance plans.
School-Based Counseling Services
Since 1998, MSC has provided on-site mentoring to at-risk youth by pairing children & teenagers with dedicated licensed therapists.
With partnerships throughout Newark and the Oranges, MSC is able to serve over 250 students per week. Counseling services are available to all grades, starting from pre-K to high school seniors.
The focal point of school-based counseling is social & emotional learning (SEL). Topics are often focused on self-esteem, conflict resolution, getting along with others, and controlling oneself.

MSC also offers a short-term therapy program as a choice for clients who want to address issues occurring in the present. Through 12 sessions, the goal is to utilize strengths to overcome difficult situations.
