Meet Our Client: North Branch Nature Center

Connecting people with the natural world, especially youth, is an essential part of North Branch Nature Center’s mission.

What is North Branch Nature Center?

North Branch Nature Center (NBNC) is a Vermont-based organization that provides nature immersion programs to people of all ages.

NBNC provides children with a safe place to learn about the environment around them.

Located on 28-acres, NBNC’s mission is to inspire generations to become connected with the world around them as environmental stewards.

In addition to programs embedded within the nature center, NBNC also has off-site programming and works closely with schools to promote outdoor learning.

NBNC’s early childhood programs introduce families and young children to quality, nature-based programming that fosters a love for the planet. Free family programs and additional support are also offered to educate preschool and kindergarten students.

NBNC’s early childhood programs fosters a love for the planet.

NBNC’s main early childhood programs are comprised of the Forest Preschool and Robin’s Nest.

NBNC’s Forest Preschool

The Forest Preschool (FPS) program is embedded within the center, with a nature and play-based curriculum that empowers children to connect with each other and the world around them.

Forest Preschool empowers children to connect with each other and the world around them.

Each day, children are offered “loose parts play” to explore nature-inspired art projects, storytelling to promote literacy development, using real tools to promote fine motor skills, and more.

Last year, students have planted a conservation nursery with maple seeds. There is also a mud kitchen, which allows children to become “chefs” and use their imagination.

Children love the mud kitchen at NBNC.

Robin’s Nest Nature Playgroup

NBNC’s Robin’s Nest Nature Playgroup (Robin’s Nest) is another key program aimed at families with children ages 0-5.

Robin’s Nest offers an introduction to nature-based play, guided by the idea that children need to spend time outdoors.

Robin’s Nest Nature Playgroup is a family favorite.

Families enjoy spontaneous play, exploration, songs, crafts, and storytelling. In the past year, Robin’s Nest has increased its number of annual sessions.

What Sets NBNC Apart?

NBNC sets the foundation for a love of nature for children and families, as it truly provides the community with access to environmental education at every stage of life.

NBNC truly serves the community.

Through the Educating Children Outdoors (ECO) program, NBNC reaches 1,600 students annually. NBNC works with 15 public schools to help meet Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards outdoors, as well as connect students to the center.

Due to its incredible work, NBNC is also part of the Association of Nature Center Administrators, a national organization of nature centers to share nature-based practices with other child care centers in Vermont and beyond.

The Turrell Fund is proud to support North Branch Nature Center and its mission of making early-nature experiences accessible to all young Vermonters and their families.
