Meet Our Client: The Institute of Music for Children

On July 24, the Turrell Fund visited the Institute of Music for Children during the Summer Arts Institute when students explore different art forms in preparation for their August Showcase.

What is The Institute of Music for Children (the Institute)?

The Institute of Music for Children (the Institute) provides an extensive arts education to children and families, with the mission of building a community that is based on the love of the arts. It serves students from grades K-12, along with a leadership program for older students.

Students can explore 40 art forms through group classes and private lessons, as well as engage within their communities.

What sets the Institute apart?

The most defining factor of the Institute is the Youth Leader program, which serves the organization’s mission of community building.

As students get older, they are able to become Youth Leaders that help teachers in each class. In addition to their employment in Institute classrooms, Youth Leaders also manage social media, support events, pitch ideas for different art forms to explore, as well as train to become teachers themselves.

About the Summer Arts Institute

While the Institute serves students during the school year, around 250 students are part of the summer camp to continue their arts education.

Each week, students explore 8 out of the 40 art forms that the Institute offers. Some classes include Anime, African Dance, Acting, Violin, Yoga, Young Chefs. Many art forms expose students to disciplines that they have never experienced before, such as African drums.

“It was super fun and since I’ve never played any type of drum before, it was very exciting,” one Summer Camper said. “It was fun to learn new beats and find something new to focus on.”

Students in grades 1-3 participate in a final showcase at the end of the summer that shares their accomplishments. Older students can participate in a Summer Production at Kean University, with a concentration of dance, band, percussion, acting or set design.

Why is the Institute a Turrell Client?

The Institute provides opportunities for students to not only grow as artists in multiple fields, but also as leaders within their own community.

“There is always something new to learn and experience,” said another Summer Camper.

Students learn about public speaking and gain confidence throughout the Institute’s programs – whether it’s during the school year or summer.
